Given the fact that the rhinoplasty procedure is the most popular cosmetic surgery in California and the entire country, it is no surprise that people of all ages, shapes and sizes desire to have it performed on them. Most recently, data has shown that teenage rhinoplasty is the most popular cosmetic surgery for this young adult demographic. Dr. Kevin Sadati has noticed an increased interest from Orange County teens at his Newport Beach practice. He understands why teenagers want to have this procedure done, but he takes special care of these patients at the same time.
It is important that teenagers who want a nose job recognize that there are several age restrictions in place. Any patient under the age of 18 will need to have written consent from a parent or legal guardian before the surgery is performed.
Rhinoplasty is a major surgical procedure, and all involved parties need to be on the same page. Dr. Sadati recommends that teens and their parents come together to the initial consultation so that everyone is well informed about the surgery prior to heading to the operating room.
When is the right time to for teenagers to have rhinoplasty?
Besides the legal age restriction, there are several medical age restrictions, as well. Young women who want to have a rhinoplasty procedure performed need to be between 15 and 16 years old. Young men who want to have a nose job will need to be between 16 and 17 years old, which are the ages when the nose is fully grown and developed. Dr. Sadati will determine if the patient is ready for the procedure during the consultation appointment. It is essential to wait until development is complete, otherwise the nose will continue its growth and the results will change.
However, Dr. Sadati does find it beneficial to work on patients in this age range. A patient’s nose is easier to reshape and mold during the young adult years. It has more elasticity, therefore, the surgeon is typically able to provide better results. Also, youth is on their side. Teens are more resilient, and typically have a shorter recovery period. This surgery can often be done during a school break, and the patient can return to the classroom once the break is complete. However, contact sports should be avoided for at least a month.
This rhinoplasty has the potential to have a great impact on a teenager’s life. This is a tough time for many people, and by improving their looks teenagers often find they have more self confidence. By building their self esteem and improving their body image, they are able to put their best foot forward as they enter adulthood.
