Reducing Swelling After a Revision Rhinoplasty

The rhinoplasty revision is a more complex cosmetic surgery procedure, it is designed to fix the appearance or structure of the nose after a primary rhinoplasty. This means that Orange County patients who opt to have a revision rhinoplasty performed are undergoing their second major surgery on their fragile nasal structure. There is a significant amount of swelling and bruising after the rhinoplasty revision because of this fact, and the recovery can take longer. However, Newport Beach patients find that it is worth it in order to obtain the results that they wanted in the first place.

How Can I Reduce Swelling After a Revision Rhinoplasty?

The most important thing that patients can do in order to reduce swelling after their rhinoplasty revision is to rest for at least 48 hours after the operation. A caretaker should be available for a minimum of 24 hours to ensure that the patient can focus on resting and recovering. Patients should lay with their heads elevated in order to minimize the amount of pressure on the nose. Patients should not lay flat while sleeping for at least three weeks.

Patients should also stay hydrated. The best drink to choose during the revision rhinoplasty recovery is water. When a patient does not have enough water in their body, the body will start to retain water. This can increase the amount of swelling in the face. In order to keep from dehydrating, patients should avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours after the operation.

Apply cold compresses to the face after the surgery. A bag of frozen peas is one of the best ways to keep the area comfortable, reduce swelling and avoid damaging the results of the surgery. Do not apply anything that is hot or heated to the nose after the rhinoplasty revision operation.

Do not participate in any contact sports and avoid all strenuous exercise for several months after the operation. The nose is especially fragile at this time, and patients who exert themselves too much may damage the results from the surgery. Patients should do their best to avoid injury and protect their nose in the months that follow their revision rhinoplasty procedure.

Follow all instructions that are provided to you by the doctor. The facial plastic surgeon will provide each patient with personalized instructions designed to minimize the swelling after the surgery. Only take medications or supplements that have been approved by your doctor, and respect all restrictions that have been put in place.

Patients should expect gradual results from their revision procedure. The first week will be especially painful, and the nose will be very swollen. Between week one and week 6, the body will work to heal the nose and a yellow tint may be present on the skin. Residual swelling during this time is completely normal. Final results will not be seen until the remodeling phase of the recovery is complete, and this can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. Patients who are interested in a revision rhinoplasty should contact a nose surgeon for more information.
